Knowing Knowledge from Zing and Knowledge Creation Press

Knowing Knowledge is a workshop approach to the Theory of Knowledge program offered as part of the International Baccalaureate.

Students explore how knowledge is discovered or learned through a series of workshops that are presented as a series of rich, open ended, discussable questions. After discussing each question, the students capture their ideas via a team learning system, using wireless keyboards connected to a laptop computer, or via a network of laptops.
The participants review their ideas, look for patterns, then use a sense-making method to develop their own theories and models.

The program was developed by Dr. John Findlay, whose expertise is in educational psychology and closely follows the design of the TOK course, but begins from the tacit knowledge of the students, so that it is both engaging and accessible.

The approach is based on Interactivity Theory, which builds on cultural historical activity theory and the work of Lev Vygotsky and A.R. Luria, the ideas of complexity theorist Stuart Kauffman, the community of knowers approach of Parker Palmer, the multi-faceted approach adopted in Imagination in Education, and elements of the thinking skills approach of Edward De Bono.

The 60 workshops explore how we know what we know through the various lenses of the IB, in particular through the natural and human sciences, arts and languages and the role of reason, perception, emotion and ethics.

The software also contains workshops to help students understand research concepts, prepare an essay plan, review a presentation and have their peers participate in a constructive review of their written work.

We are delighted to give you a guided tour - in person or via the Internet, arrange for you to have a chat with John, or perhaps organize a seminar at your school. John has been working with/introducing these methods to some International Schools in Asia.
